Yesterday, we found a salamander in the basement!
It was cold and not moving very much. We warmed it up, fed it some of our composting worms and spiders and he/she seems to be much more active this morning.
Not sure how this is going to turn out. We are learning as much about spotted salamanders as quickly as possible. But first things first! He/she needs a name. Here are the options, please comment with your name preference by October 14 at 6pm:
(Also, thank you all for the comments to our blogs. We read them to the girls and we love your comments. I haven't figured out yet how to comment back/repsond but I'm hoping to figure that out soon.)

Here are some pictures of our little friend:
Here in South Jersey the eastern tiger salamander is threatened. I know some people studying it. I don't know how to attach an article in this blog so I will send an e-mail to someone. They are hard to care for I think because being amphibians they need exact moist conditions for their delicate skin. Do you think the Spotted Salamander has found a safe place to sleep the winter through in your basement ?
The Hewitts vote for Swift - especially given his/her escape! What a creative list of names for one salamander!
Looks like Captain or Dragon Fire to me. Or maybe, Captain Dragon Fire!
Love that 'she' is feasting on worms and spiders...the web of a healthy life. Have fun!
I vote for Topaz!
